Journal Lock ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

  • Journal entries and content you create within the app
  • AI coach conversations, prompts, and responses you submit
  • Media you attach to entries (photos and videos)
  • Mood selections and other optional entry metadata you choose to add
  • Account information if you sign in with Apple (Apple user ID, and optionally name and email)
  • Support requests and communications

Subscription and Purchase Information

  • Subscription status, product identifiers, and purchase history from Apple and RevenueCat

Automatically Collected Information

  • Device information (device type, operating system version, app version)
  • App usage analytics (feature usage, onboarding and paywall events)
  • Event properties such as word count, entry type, and whether an entry includes media or mood

Permissions and On-Device Data (Optional)

  • Location (when in use) to attach place context and fetch weather for entries
  • Microphone and Speech Recognition for voice-to-text
  • Apple Music access to capture currently playing track metadata
  • Camera and Photo Library to attach photos or videos
  • Notifications to schedule journaling reminders
  • Screen Time authorization to lock apps you choose
  • Face ID / Touch ID to secure access to the app

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and maintain the app functionality
  • To sync your data to our backend when you are signed in
  • To respond to your support requests
  • To generate AI coaching, summaries, and weekly notes
  • To improve our app and services with analytics
  • To send important updates about the app
  • To manage subscriptions and purchases

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Your journal entry content and AI session content are encrypted before being stored on our servers using a key stored in your iCloud Keychain. However, some content (such as summary text used for AI features) may be sent and stored in plaintext on our backend to enable those features.

When you use biometric authentication (Face ID or Touch ID), your biometric data is processed entirely on your device by Apple's secure enclave and is never transmitted to us.

Data Storage

Journal data can be stored locally in the app sandbox on your device. When you are signed in, entries, metadata, and attachments can be synced to our backend (Convex) and its storage service. Encryption keys used for content encryption are stored in iCloud Keychain to enable cross-device access. Weekly notes PDFs are stored in our backend storage for download.

Sharing and Third-Party Services

We use trusted third-party services to operate the app. These providers may process your information to deliver their services:

  • Convex for backend data storage and sync
  • Anthropic (Claude) for AI coaching, summaries, and weekly notes generation
  • PostHog for product analytics
  • RevenueCat and Apple for subscription and payment processing
  • Apple services for Sign in with Apple, WeatherKit, MusicKit, Speech Recognition, and Screen Time

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Delete your data from the app
  • Manage permissions (location, microphone, music, notifications) in device settings

Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as you keep your account or choose to keep entries on your device. You can delete entries at any time in the app, and you can delete your account to remove your cloud data.

Children's Privacy

Our app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
